Our Story
Arte Kanela Flamenco is recognised as one of Australia’s most powerful and exciting flamenco forces. Formed in Melbourne’s Spanish Quarter in 1990, the company brings over three decades of artistic excellence to the stage, blending deep traditional roots with bold contemporary expression. Their performances have captivated audiences at Australia’s most prestigious venues and arts festivals, as well as through collaborations with leading artists from Australia and Spain.
At the core of Arte Kanela Flamenco are brothers Richard and Johnny Tedesco—two of Australia’s most respected flamenco artists. Richard Tedesco, flamenco guitarist and musical director, is celebrated for his expressive fluidity and his ability to unite diverse musical voices into a compelling flamenco experience. Johnny Tedesco is a Flamenco dancer and percussionist, renowned for his skill, precision, musicality and fierce drive towards continuous creative musical and choreographic development. Alongside is acclaimed flamenco dancer Chantelle Cano, recognised as one of Australia’s most compelling performers and celebrated for her striking stage presence, fierce footwork, and deep musical sensitivity. She brings every performance to life with elegance and intensity, uniquely her own, translating rhythm and emotion into movement that captivates audiences worldwide. Together, they deliver flamenco that is emotionally charged, technically masterful, and constantly evolving.
Arte Kanela Flamenco’s reach extends well beyond the flamenco world. They have collaborated with artists including Kate Ceberano, The Cat Empire, Latin Grammy nominee Diego Guerrero, and Puerto Flamenco, and have appeared on major television programs and film projects, including works by Roger Spottiswoode. They have performed at landmark festivals such as WOMADelaide, WOMAD New Zealand, Woodford Folk Festival, Melbourne International Arts Festival, and Sydney Festival, with repeated invitations to major arts centres across Australia and New Zealand.
